As bats that come awake in a cave made

eerie by their rustling, when first one

then another, all clinging to the stone

and to each other in a cluster, spread

their wings and begin to flit and gibber,

so the slaughtered were led by Hermes holding

his fateful, golden wand, all flittering

beyond the Ocean past the Gates of the Sun,

past that place where undreamed dreams are born,

to these open fields and meadows: and here

other phantoms gather to ask them who

caused their wounds that still bleed

up there, even as the god leads

the way into the silence they fly through.
